Field notes

Before you go

Sri Lankan elephants

The Sri Lankan elephant is a subspecies of the Asian elephant. Herds move across the Minneriya–Kaudulla–Hurulu landscape following water and grazing.

Photographing wildlife

Morning and late-afternoon light is softest. A zoom lens lets you keep a respectful distance while filling the frame.

Preparing for your safari

Bring a hat, sunscreen, water and neutral clothing. Jeep tracks can be dusty or muddy depending on the season.

Choosing between parks

Minneriya and Kaudulla are reservoir parks with open views; Hurulu offers forest tracks. Recent reports matter more than reputation.

Responsible tourism

Watching elephants with respect

  • β—†Keep a calm distance and never block an elephant's path
  • β—†No feeding, shouting or flash photography
  • β—†Stay inside the jeep at all times
  • β—†Ask drivers not to crowd animals with other vehicles
